Franken pond treatment plant – Sustainable sludge utilisation with MUD technology

At a pond sewage treatment plant in Franconia, the Amodes team was faced with the task of treating around 10,000 m³ of heavily aged, digested and sedimented sewage sludge with massive algae growth. The particular challenge: the sludge’s dewaterability was extremely low, and it seemed almost impossible to reach solid material. In addition, no fresh water was available – a hurdle for any mobile dewatering system.

Solution:

The innovative MUD technology from Amodes made it possible to process the sludge efficiently and dewater it reliably. The high quality of the filtrate water made it possible to return the process water directly to the fining pond. From there, it was reused as process water – a closed water cycle without an external water supply.

Results:

• Sludge ready for loading: dry matter content > 35 %
• Further processing: The dewatered sludge was further processed in a local biogas plant (digestate or sewage sludge drying).
• Thermal utilisation: The dried material was then thermally utilised in the cement industry.
